Augustus’s Letter to his Mother

By Arthur Winks

Dear Mum,

This trip is not turning out to be quite the adventure I had hoped. The Silver Knights are, quite simply, stark raving mad.

We’ve been at sea three days, but it feels like forty. Aside from the constant bilge-cleaning duty that the Captain has me on, me and the other marines have a betting pool going on which one the Knights is going to lose it and murder everyone first. The dark-skinned elf and the human lady seem to spend most of their time talking to themselves. The dwarf is just plain rude, and there’s a human with a funny accent that gives me the creeps. Every time he looks at us it seems like he’s trying to figure out which part of us would taste the best. Then there is one of the elves who spends his day riding some airy steed in circles around the ship out in the open water. I don’t know what it does for him, but it keeps him busy.

The rest seem ok most the time, but quite frankly, weird stuff seems to happen all the time around them. Before we left the island, I could’ve sworn they were about to start fighting each other, but then my head started to hurt and I had to go lie down for a bit. I can’t quite remember what happened after that, but I’m sure it was bad. Sometimes at night I’m sure I can see their eyes glow. I’d heard stories about how strange the Knights were, but I never quite believed them until now.

To top it off, they seem to have done something to anger the Silver Order Command. I don’t really know what’s happened, but Captain Darby’s told us we’re not to do anything they say without talking to him first.

I’m told we’ll reach our first destination tonight, and I’m hoping we can finish this “mission” up soon so I can put in for a transfer. This is all getting a bit too weird for me, and I’m getting a bad feeling about this trip. I have no idea when you’ll get this letter. Hopefully I can deliver it myself when I come home.

Love to all,
Augie
